these past two years

So, what have I been doing these past 2 years when I wasn’t keeping up with this blog?I’ll tell you.Well, I had another baby. A real sweetie with apricot blond hair who was born at home, though that wasn’t the plan.And I co-chaired my son’s school’s fun fair which was so much work and so much fun and such a success.fun fairWe moved house! Clear across the other side of the city, but now we have a big yard to enjoy the outdoors and more space for everyone inside.And of course I’ve continued cooking. And baking, photographing, making lists and talking about food… I just haven’t been sharing it here. But I will tell you about some of it now.There were…Valentine’s day cookies: sugar cookie dough was shaped into balls then rolled in sprinkles and pressed lightly so they’d stick on. Then the cookies were baked where they became crispy domes with soft, crumbly centres. Yum.

Because we were celebrating my oldest son’s return home from his first year at university and that was his meal choice. We had a couple of guests joining us and I made turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and green salad (with tomatoes and cucumber: our standard basic salad). There may have been dessert, but I don’t recall it. And I didn’t make the gravy, he and my mom did.turkey dinnerWe had some saucy grilled shrimp lettuce wraps. My oldest son and I watched David Chang’s Ugly Delicious on Netlflix and were loosely inspired from there, though if you watch the show you might not even know when anyone ate lettuce wraps. But that’s still the order of events to our making and eating them.

I made a sauce of ginger, garlic, cilantro, parsley, salt, pepper, chilies, soy sauce, red onion, lime juice and sugar; then we (ok, he) grilled shrimps and, after peeling off their shells, tossed them in the sauce. We put them on the table with soft lettuce leaves (arranged by my son) and a bunch of fresh toppings: A big bunch of cilantro, as well as some parsley; bean noodles; apple, mango, cucumber, green onion, carrot; wedges of lime; and there was probably some chopped nuts, too. I know there wasn’t enough overall.

Of course that is not 2 years of food thoughts. It’s a short list.But it is a few highlights, and I’m sure I’ll have more thoughts moving forward. You can read about them here.
